My name is Ethan Gould, I graduated Highschool in 2013 and after a semester of college at Northern Arizona University made the big decision to break off the beaten college path to move into the booming industry of technology. I began studying on my own about web design and programming the Ruby language for the past few months. By now I have a well-founded understanding of HTML and how it works with CSS to form awesome webpages with intuitive layouts. I also find my self writing code in ruby and am working towards combining it with the Rails framework to make web aplications. Self taught can sometimes be overlooked as a source for good work due to lack of a college degree, however, in the traditional schooling system it is often the case that students are learning for the short term test and dont retain the information for the longterm. I fall victim to this (I'm sure I'm not the only one) and am now making a change in the way I educated myself.
Why I choose self taught
I did well in college, passed all my classes, didnt have alot of absences but it felt like I was wasting time and money learning about things that were not related to my end game plan and I was not as motivated to learn them. Since my decision to make my own way into the industry I have found that being self taught is a more effective way for me to learn because wihtout the degree, you really have to be able to prove that you know what your doing if you want to be taken into consideration for employment. This mind set forces you to dig down and find the answers to your problems at the root and over come them. This makes for a much deeper understanding and icreases ones overall prowess. The more exposure and involvement I got, the more confident I felt in my abilitites, and the more I progressed. I am without a doubt far from "experienced" but I am a believer in the learn-by-doing approach to learning anything. Learning a new skill takes time and commitment, both of which I am willing sacrifice

GOALS
Why I Like Programming
I enjoy prgramming for its unique ability to take an idea and turn it into a working reality that is totally original and completely your own. I like the mental demand of figuring out how to covert the human language and desires into a someting the computer can understand and execute. Another aspect of web development that i I find amusing is to be a bit of a designer when making page layouts. It's satisfying to me to see the final outcome of my project, it is usually worth the effort!
Where I Want to Take It
I want to be on the front lines of the always changing world of the technology to ensure my knowledge of the the most up to date and efficient methods of web-design. I have chosen this field because I am certian it will be in an ever-increasing demand as advancements are make in technology and how we use it. My goal is to increase my understnding and exposure to the industry to be able to meet the demands of the growing industry.
